Senior Graduation Photography Session in Kinston, North Carolina

One thing about a great photography session is the memory behind it. Whether it’s prom, a sports game, or graduation, capturing those moments is important. These milestones help you see how far you’ve come, and in many ways, the journey is the most important part. If you think about most stories or books, the main character doesn’t spend the entire story celebrating. The celebration usually comes in the final chapter after everything they’ve gone through.

High school is much the same. It’s a journey and, in many ways, a gateway into adulthood. In theory, it’s only book one of your story, but there are still many important moments worth remembering along the way.

Bring a Friend or Family Member

One of the most important parts of the journey is the people who helped you get there. Whether it’s parents, siblings, friends, or extended family, they are a huge part of both the process and the celebration. No journey is complete without the people who supported you through it.

Including them in your graduation photos makes the session even more meaningful. They’ve encouraged you, supported you, and walked through difficult moments with you. Graduation is a celebration for them, too. Plus, they’re always there to hype you up and help make the session more fun and relaxed.

How to Dress

Your graduation photos should reflect your personality, but there are a few tips that can help make the day go smoothly. Most importantly, wear something that makes you feel comfortable and confident.

Many graduates prefer simple outfits that coordinate well with their school colors, cords, or stole. Dresses with neutral or solid colors tend to photograph beautifully. For the fellas, dress pants and a button-up shirt are always a solid choice. Ties aren’t required, but they can add a little extra style to your photos. And don’t forget accessories like a nice watch — preferably not the Apple Watch for this occasion.

It’s also a good idea to bring an extra outfit. Your journey wasn’t limited to the classroom. Clubs, sports, organizations, and extracurricular activities were all part of your story, and those deserve to be captured as well.

Cap & Gown + Tassel

This may seem obvious, but bringing your full cap and gown regalia is extremely important. While we won’t spend the entire session taking cap and gown photos, those are often the images your family and support system will treasure the most.

You can always schedule another session in a dress or casual outfit, but graduation photos in your cap and gown are the core memories. Those are the images that truly mark the accomplishment and celebrate the milestone.

Location, Location, Location

Choosing the right location for your graduation photos also makes a huge difference. In this session, we photographed at Lenoir Community College. The campus may be small, but it offers several photogenic locations throughout the grounds.

The fountain and courtyard are two of my favorite spots because they provide a variety of backdrops and lighting opportunities. Timing also plays a major role in creating beautiful images. For this session, sunset around 6:15 PM gave us soft, flattering light that added warmth and depth to the photos.

Multiple locations are also available upon request for graduates who want even more variety in their session.
